Port Trainee position open for applications

Wells Harbour Commissioners are introducing a Port trainee scheme this coming Autumn which will offer substantial training, typically around 24-36 months, depending on experience and qualifications.

This position will be on a short term employment contract basis and on final successful completion the trainee will have obtained recognised qualifications to take them forward in their career. At the end of the fixed term, the trainee may or may not be offered full time employment at the Port.

During the training period you will learn or gain a qualification in:

Vessel handling, berthing, mooring & towage

Engaging with the public, commissioners & working with other Port employees

Personal safety, first aid & sea survival skills (STCW)

Vessel fire prevention & firefighting (STCW)

Buoy deployment and Maintenance

Basic navigation, use of aids & understanding of tidal flows (RYA)

Vessel rope work, anchoring & mooring

VHF use & radio communications

Carry out specific Port operations for a range of activities including, leisure, fishing, windfarm and passenger vessels.

Health & safety, security procedures and best practice

Manual handling

Oil spill & boom deployment, oil emergency response

Conservation & protection of the marine environment

Maintenance of the Harbour estate and its facilities

During the training period you will gain a basic knowledge of:

Maintenance of marine equipment and vessels

Hydrography, conservancy & dredging operations

Electronic navigational aids

AIS, CCTV systems & operation

Marine meteorology

Port infrastructure, vessel movements & operations

Vessel hull construction, method, types & repairs

Vessel propulsion & manoeuvring systems

Port responsibilities, statutory powers & duties

Boat yard operations

The Port will expect the following conduct from the successful trainee:
