New Coastwatch access officially opened
Thr 14 Apr 2016

The new Coastwatch walkway/access was officially opened yesterday by the Harbour Master, Robert Smith. Robert and the other Harbour staff involved in building the new access were thanked by the Station.

The previous wooden access steps to the watchtower were in disrepair, unsafe and suffering from subsidence. Quotes to replace the steps with a rear access were in the region of £12,000 outside the financial capacity of the station to raise.

Wells Harbour Commissioners donated and installed the 36' metal walkway and also landscaped the entrance with fencing and steps in acknowledgment of the value of the service the watch provides to the community, when on a typical summers day approximately 2000 people can enjoy the beach. If a solution to the access to the lookout tower was not found, the station may have had to close.

We hope the new access allows NCI Wells Coastwatch to serve the community for the future.
