Old ships anchor sucessfully lifted
Sat 31 Oct 2015

In 2015, WHC enlisted the help of a team from North Norfolk Divers to recover the chain from the West Cardinal mark which broke loose during a bad weather. Unfortunately the diving team didn’t find the chain but they did locate an old anchor during their search.

The position of the anchor within the harbour limits was considered by the Harbour Master to be a potential obstruction to the seaward approach to the harbour and the diving team were given further instructions to buoy the anchor for lifting.

On 31st October 2015, the Ports vessel Frank-T along with harbour staff and a support team from North Norfolk Divers using their RHIB Norfolk Hero went out and successfully lifted the anchor which was brought to Wells Quay. After preservation it is hoped the anchor will be positioned on a raised plinth on the quayside to create a seating area for visitors to enjoy the view to the marsh. It will be dedicated to all the seafarers who have lost their lives in the North Sea. The anchor is yet to be dated but believed to be from the 1700s.
