Great turnout for the 8th North Norfolk Triathlon
Mon 21 Sep 2015
This year the event was run by the Harbour Master, Robert Smith and Administrator Louise De Lisle and staff from Wells Harbour for the Wells Harbour Maritime Trust to raise money for the charity which benefits young local people in sailing and maritime activities and courses.
Wells Harbour Commissioners as in previous years donated the use of the car park for the transition by closing it whilst the event took place.
Robert Smith compered the event and started by introducing young Abbi McCallum from Wells who at the age of 10 is the Eastern Region champion for the under 11's. Abbi competed in 9 events this year winning 5 and coming second in 4, which gave her the title.
The event started with the swim which was split into three waves starting at 10:56 and all harbour movements were suspended while the swimmers were in the water with Harbour vessels and Wensum Ospreys Canoe Club and other volunteers acting as safety boats.
286 individuals and 16 relay teams entered the event and the overall winner was Oliver Milk who finished in 01:56:04. Winner of the women’s section was Sonia Spearing in 02:19:51.
Sheila Oxtoby, the Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council, who were one of the sponsors, entered the competition for the second time finishing in an impressive time of 02:36:40.
The large crowds who came out to support the event were delighted to see Wells-next-the-sea locals Niall McCallum finishing in fifth place with a time of 02:04:42 and local nurse Camille Simmons who beat her time last year by 19 minutes 11 seconds in a time of 02:54:17. Local family Team O'Neil came first in the relay for the third time with a time of 02:02:06.
We have received some amazing feedback and we can report that the event will be held again next year so set the date - 4th September 2016.
There have been many photos taken and a few are included below. More can be found on our facebook page - see link on our homepage "Port of Wells".
We would like to thank our sponsors: Sheringham Shoal, North Norfolk District Council, Holkham Estate, The Globe Inn, Wensum Pools and Mr Bill Jordan all without which the event could not go ahead.
Thanks also to Wensum Ospreys Canoe Club, Race Timing Solutions, Pat Weston for providing gazebos at late notice (even though we did not need them in the end), David McArthur who provided the drone footage, Reg Holl and Martyn Gould our photographers, Steve Finch of Wells Football Club for allowing us to use the club for registration, Commissioners of Wells Harbour some of whom helped out on the day, all our volunteer marshals who are just fantastic, and not forgetting all the dedicated and hard working harbour staff.
