The construction work, comprising a jetty and 150m of pontoons, at Buxton’s Bight on the new Outer Harbour has now completed. It is anticipated that mains electricity and water services will be connected by the end of the month.

Steelwork and piling have been coloured to blend with the background and the hope is the dredged sand which forms the banks will take on a more natural appearance over time. Signs have been posted to remind visitors to keep away from the banks so as not to disturb ground nesting birds and there will be no public access to the jetty.

The small beach, south of the Life Boat House, has been re-profiled as per our conditions, and we feel enhanced, as the beach now has more natural sand. A safe swimming area is being created for use at high and low tides.

The dredging in the channel and Outer Harbour will improve access times into Wells. Vessels from SCIRA and other contractors have already booked berths from the beginning April. These vessels will service the 88 turbines of SCIRA’s Sheringham Shoal offshore Wind Farm, which is targeted to be operational from the end 2011.

Harbour Master, Robert Smith, who has worked on the Harbour for 21 years, said this investment is vital for the future of Wells and the surrounding areas. The new Harbour will enable Wells to take full advantage of the opportunities coming from the expected wind energy boom. It will maintain Wells as a working Port and create jobs and business opportunities for the local area.

Currently focus is on the Sheringham Shoal, but it is expected that other wind farms may follow generating further opportunities in the future. This is the reason why Wells Harbour Commissioners have worked so hard to support this project.
