The new dredger for the channel works project has arrived in Wells.
Built by Goodchild Marine of Great Yarmouth, the 24m 200-ton Kari Hege is a motorised barge supporting a purpose-built JCB excavator with a large 21m reach. The intention is create and maintain a channel with a minimum 1m depth during neap tides from the harbour entrance to new pontoons to be constructed at the north end of beach bank, so that windfarm crew boats can access the harbour as required. Rather than actually 'dredging' as such, the excavator will be moving material to one side to deepen the existing channel.
The Kari Hege has been brought up to the quay for a few days so that people can have a look at the boat but she will normally be kept near the lifeboat house. An official naming ceremony is due to take place on the quayside in mid-October.
The dredger has a normal working crew of two and we're delighted that Martin Emerson has been appointed as skipper and Dave Dungey as JCB driver. The initial works are scheduled for six months until March 2010, with subsequent maintenance as necessary.
The boat is shown below with Robert Smith (Harbour Master), Alan Goodchild (Goodchild Marine), Martin Emerson (Skipper), Dave Green (Goodchild Marine) and Charlie Ward (Project Officer).
